What’s the difference between DC & AC motors?

The most fundamental difference between the two is how they produce electricity, which makes a big difference in their functionality. DC stands for “direct current” and AC stands for “alternating current” – i.e., something like an alternator uses an alternating current to produce electricity.

Which one should I use?

When choosing between the two, it’s important to take into account the level of power control you need, and the source of the energy. This is best determined by talking to one of our specialists.

AC motors have a higher electricity output, more energy efficiency, and continuous energy changes. For this reason, AC motors are more suited for:

  • Air compressors or compressor power drives
  • Hydraulic or irrigation pumps
  • Computers
  • Appliances

DC motors do not have the same high electricity output or energy efficiency, but the level of energy produced is more stable for longer periods of time. For this reason, DC motors are more suited for:

  • Vacuums
  • Sewing machines
  • Fabrication or production machines
